As we know, the South Asian Games, a multi-sport event, is the regional Games of the Olympic Council of Asia. Hereby we are providing a Fact Sheet of 12th South Asian Games, which shall be useful for upcoming competitive exams

 

 

Fact Sheet for 12th South Asian Games 2016

Dates 5th to 16th February 2016
Venue 26 venues across the cities of Guwahati and Shillong. Main Venues are Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium (Guwahati) and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (Shillong)
Logo The logo has eight petals representing the countries participating in the 12th South Asian Games. The petals are seen to be moving in a clockwise direction showing the positive spirit of the games
Mascot The name of the Mascot for the Games is a one-horned baby Rhino named ‘Tikhor’.
Official Motto ‘Play for Peace, Progress and Prosperity’
Theme Song Theme Song of 12th South Asian Games is Assamese Song “Ei Prithibi Ek Krirangan” which literally translates to “The world is a playground”. It was written by Dr. Bhupen Hazarika (1926–2011)
Participating Countries Eight South Asian countries namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Note:

  • Kolhapur’s Anant Khasbardar and Abhijeet Krishna of NIFT Patna created the mascot and logo respectively
  • 4500 sorts persons and officials from 8 countries will participate in 12th South Asian Games 2016

Trivia Related to South Asian Games

  • South Asian Games is also popular as the Olympic Games of South Asia
  • The first South Asian Games were hosted by Kathmandu, Nepal in 1984
  • Since 1984, South Asian Games have been held every two years except for some occasions
  • In 2004, it was decided to rename the games from South Asian Federation Games to South Asian Games as the officials believed the word Federation was diminishing the emphasis on event and acting as a barrier in attracting crowd
  • India is hosting South Asian Games for the third time. Earlier instances being in year 1985 – Kolkata and 1995 – Madras
  • Last edition of South Asian Games was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2012, whereas the next edition will be held in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2019
